Hills of the Wind: wine, nature, and tradition in Villasimius

A name that comes from the wind

Every winery has a story. Ours begins with something invisible — the wind.

In Villasimius, in south-east Sardinia, the wind isn't a detail of the landscape. It is a constant presence that shapes the land, protects the vines and governs how the grapes ripen. It is the first reason these hills produce wines with such a precise, recognisable character. And that's where our name comes from: Colline del Vento, the Hills of the Wind.

Founded in 2006 on five hectares of vineyard between the Brennas hills and the sea of Villasimius, ours is a small winery by choice — big enough to make quality wines, small enough never to lose sight of a single detail.

The territory: granite, sea and light

Sarrabus — the area that includes Villasimius and the south-eastern coast of Sardinia — is one of the island's most interesting and least talked-about wine territories. It doesn't have the fame of Gallura or Sulcis, but it has something few places in the world can offer: a microclimate created by the meeting of the sea and the granite hills.

The soils of our vineyards are mostly weathered granite, at 230–250 metres above sea level with east/west exposure. Granite drains well, forces the roots to dig deep in search of water and minerals, and passes on to the vine — and then to the wine — a minerality you can taste in the glass.

The wind blowing in from the sea lowers humidity, protects the grapes from disease and regulates temperatures in the crucial weeks before harvest. The difference between day and night temperatures preserves the grapes' acidity and aromas. Every element of the territory helps build the identity of the wine.

The wines: native grapes, Sardinian character

Our production focuses on the grape varieties that have belonged to this land for thousands of years.

Vermentino — fresh, mineral, savoury — is the white wine of Villasimius par excellence. It smells of white flowers, citrus and sea salt. It's a wine to drink while looking at the sea.

Cannonau — the oldest red of the Mediterranean — shows elegant tannins, ripe fruit and a surprising depth in this area. A wine to keep in the cellar and open when the moment deserves it.

Nuragus becomes something completely different in the right hands: made with long skin maceration, it gives life to our orange wines Zankitai and C'alma — amber, complex wines that carry the light and granite of Villasimius.

Every wine is a story. Not an interpretation of the territory, not a correction: a faithful account.

Sustainability: respecting what the land has already done

We don't use the word "sustainable" as a marketing label. We use it because it describes exactly how we work.

In the vineyard we keep human intervention to a minimum, respect the natural cycles of the soil and the plants, and don't correct what nature has already balanced. The harvest is done by hand — every bunch picked by hand in September, when the balance between sugars, acidity and aromas is just right.

In the cellar the approach is the same: we accompany the wine in its natural development, without rushing it or making it uniform. The result is wines that change from year to year — as every vintage changes, as every self-respecting territory changes.

Honey: the same respect, a different product

The vineyards of Villasimius are not alone. All around them grows the Mediterranean scrub — asphodel, strawberry tree, thistle, rockrose — and our beehives live in the middle of it.

Our artisan honeys come from the same philosophy as our wines: no intervention that alters the natural product, respect for the rhythm of the hive, full traceability from flower to table. Strawberry tree honey, asphodel honey, Mediterranean scrub honey — each with its own precise aromatic profile, each the child of an unmistakable territory.

And fresh royal jelly — harvested with the same care we put into picking our grapes.

Coming to Villasimius: an experience to remember

Colline del Vento isn't just a winery to order from online. It's a place to visit — especially if you're in Sardinia in summer or autumn, when the vineyards change colour.

We offer guided tours of the vineyard and cellar, tastings of our wines in the place where they were born, and the chance to take home something authentic — not a souvenir, but a bottle with a true story inside.

Villasimius is one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy. Our hills are ten minutes from the most turquoise sea you've ever seen. Combining the two is easier than it sounds.

Choosing Colline del Vento

Choosing our wines means choosing a specific place, a specific philosophy, specific people.

We don't make wines to suit every taste. We make wines for people who want to know where what they drink comes from — for those who look in the glass not just for a flavour, but for a territory, a story, a moment.

Every bottle is a piece of Sardinia. Every sip is Villasimius.

Salude e trigu — health and wheat, as we say in Sardinia.
